Reel Review: School Spirits Emotional and Mind Bending Season Finale
And that’s a wrap on School Spirits Season 2! So much has happened this season for Maddie and the spirits so let’s recap shall we?
Unraveling the mystery of Maddie and Janet’s body swap, the spirits Wally, Charley, and Rhonda are stuck inside the walls of Riverside High to uncover clues about their teacher (and mastermind) Mr. Martin. Meanwhile, the living squad Simon, Claire, Nicole, and Xavier must work together to connect the puzzle in the real world and help Maddie get her body back.
The final episode of Season 2 manages to wrap up this intense mystery and lets just say, it is quite shocking! Maddie and Janet find the solution to swapping their bodies back, but need Mr. Martin to do so. Together, they also discover the full truth about the teacher and his past.
It seems that Maddie’s work is done, yet something feels wrong. Over the course of two seasons, we’ve seen Maddie become a true friend for the spirits. The goodbye between Maddie and the spirits is heartbreaking to watch, and we definitely shed a few tears in the process. This cast has become a family, and Peyton List’s emotional performance was so real and raw in saying her goodbye.
Meanwhile Simon, Claire, Nicole, and Xavier are grappling with a range of emotions, especially wanting their friend back but still trying to wrap their heads around the all-encompassing spirit world endeavorers. Simon specifically has served as a true friend to both sides. He’s felt immense pressure and we finally see him break in this final episode. Kristian Ventura handled Simon’s character with so much love and care that we feel for him entirely.
Janet and Mr. Martin have their own personal battles to face in the last episode. While Janet is finally able to peacefully cross-over, she stays and demands answers from Mr. Martin. The two have had a rocky relationship throughout the season; in both the living and dead world. Janet’s journey has only made her stronger and she finally gets the strength to ask the questions she well-deserves the answers to.
This chain of events leads us right to the finale when Maddie wakes up in the hospital, alive and well, and surrounded by her living friends. All except Simon, who we discover has remained in the basement of the school with Mr. Martin and Janet to get even more answers. Xavier’s behavior is equally as questionable, when he begins to see spirits, specifically Maddie’s father?!
Lastly, we head over to Wally, who has been heartbroken over Maddie leaving. When he finally discovers his door and the opportunity to cross-over, it is unclear if he takes it (though we can assume he did).
Overall, the ending of School Spirits Season 2 was fast-paced and quite shocking (our favorite combination)! While it didn’t completely wrap up the mystery, it did give us enough information to connect the remaining dots and even set up a possibility of a third season!
